Carolyn Sue Wilson McCall

Carolyn Sue Wilson McCall passed into immortality on October 8, 2023 in Tyler TX. She seemed fine one day, and unexpectedly was gone the next. What a life lived for this East Texas native. She was born on a bitterly cold and icy January 14, 1937 in Bullard, TX to Otis Wilford Wilson and wife, Mary Elizabeth Barnes Wilson. At that time she had an older sister Betty. She would a few years later be joined by a younger sister, Beverly. The Wilson’s and Barnes’ were the salt of the earth, hard working and of pioneer stock. Carolyn was a determined girl and that trait would carry her through the rest of her life. Educationally, she would graduate from Tyler High School, Breckenridge School of Nursing (Austin, TX) and at the age of 49, she received her BS from East Texas State University (Commerce, TX). While down at Austin, TX attending Breckenridge, she found her soulmate in the form of Thomas S. McCall. He had to wait on her to graduate before she would marry him. This would occur on August 2, 1958 at Flint Baptist Church, Flint, TX. They would have two children, Kevin and Carol. She nursed in hospitals in California, while Tom was in seminary, in Dallas, TX at Baylor and then at the new Presbyterian Hospital in North Dallas. During her time in Dallas, both her and Tom studied to became licensed realtors. As providence would have it, she would return to East Texas in 1989, nursing in Tyler and then she finished her career at Rusk State Hospital.

Her hobby was history/genealogy. Sentimentality being a strong Wilson trait, Carolyn was the one that sat with her Grandparents as a youngster, listening to the family stories. She always had excellent recall ability, passing down the stories and lore to anyone that was interested. Carolyn was THE family historian and translated that into genealogical pursuits and the documenting of her lines through the affiliation to various heritage organizations. The first of these was her beloved United Daughters of the Confederacy (1964). Then came discoveries leading to qualifying for membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society (early 1970’s). To round out her affiliations she was able to join the National Society United States Daughters of 1812, National Society of Magna Charta Dames and Barons (late 1970’s) and finally, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas (1980’s).

Carolyn McCall was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and her younger sister. She is survived by her older sister: Betty Joyce Wilson Corcoran, her children: Thomas Kevin McCall and his wife, Kimberly Ann Kolb McCall, Carol Kathleen McCall Boone; her grandchildren: Laura Elizabeth Boone and John Michael Clay Boone and her great grandsons: Clayton Dean and Judah Pearce.
