Gwenda Atwood Hamilton

Gwenda Atwood Hamilton was born into this world on August 18, 1963, to Vernon and Shirley Atwood, in Lufkin, Texas. She left this world on January 8, 2025, at the age of 61, following a brief illness.

Those who knew her would agree that she had a kind and caring spirit, always ready to offer a prayer or a word of encouragement to any and all in need.

The joy of her life was her family; her husband Jerry of 43 years, her son Ryan, and her grandchildren. Above all else was her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Gwenda loved to travel. The word “travel” is somewhat limited. Gwenda just loved to GO! She enjoyed playing games, riding roller coasters, Mexican food, Christmas lights, and she loved Math!

Gwenda knew at a young age that she wanted to be a teacher. She dedicated 37 years of her life to teaching and her career in education. Most of these years were spent employed with Tyler ISD as well as Bullard ISD.

Gwenda attended Zavala High School, graduating as Valedictorian in 1981. She continued her education, earning her Bachelor’s degree from Stephen F. Austin University in 1985, then her Master’s degree from the University of Texas at Tyler in 1991.

She was preceded in death by her father, Vernon Atwood and mother, Shirley Burgess.

She is survived by her husband Jerry of Flint, Texas and her son, Ryan and Emily of Troy, Texas, and her grandchildren, Cara, Lincoln, and Kennedy. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Sherri and David Haines, of Lufkin, Texas, and mother and father-in-law, Onetta and Vernice Roebuck of Huntington, Texas. She is survived by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and many other family and friends.

A Memorial Service will be held in Tyler, Texas on Saturday, January 18, 2025, at 10:30am in the Rose Heights Church Fellowship Hall, 2120 Old Omen Rd.

A Memorial Service will also be held at Huntington First Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Friday, January 24th at 11AM, 702 N Main St., Huntington, TX

In Lieu of flowers Memorials may be made to Outreach Christian Fellowship, (a missionary organization) PO Box 7637, Tyler, TX 75711 -  www.outreachcf.org  -  or to a charity of your choice.
