Kathy Vela 

March 4, 1959 – August 30, 2026

 With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Kathy Vela, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, who left this world surrounded by her cherished family. Kathy was born on March 4, 1959, to Thomas and Jane Long, and her life was a testament to devotion, resilience, and unwavering love for those around her.

 Kathy's journey through life was marked by her generous spirit and tireless dedication to her family and career. She graduated from LVN school in 2003, after which she found her calling in pediatric home health. Her compassion and skill left a lasting impact on the lives of medically fragile children, whom she helped reach their fullest potential. Prior to her nursing career, Kathy worked tirelessly, often juggling multiple jobs to provide for her family. Her roles ranged from truck driver to postal service worker, daycare employee, and bus driver, illustrating her determination and strength.

 Kathy was first married to Steve Lucas on January 3, 1975, and together they raised four children. Though their paths eventually diverged, Kathy's love for her family remained steadfast. In 2007, she found love once more with Richard Vela, whom she married on November 29, 2014. This union brought three more children into her life, enriching her family and bringing her immense joy.

 Family was at the heart of everything Kathy did. She was the proud and loving matriarch of a large family, including her children Keitha and Billy Clayton, Stephen and Lit Lucas, Chelsea and Aaron Messina, Stephen and Heather Molandes, Darrin Molandes, and Tammy and Jim Beaird. Kathy cherished her role as a grandmother to Danny, Shaun, Christian, Sarah, Madyson (Noah), Austin, and Corigan, and she played an integral part in raising two of her grandchildren.

 Kathy's life was a tapestry of vibrant experiences, from the everyday joys of family gatherings to the wonder of her newfound love for cruising. Her most recent voyage in April took her to the beautiful shores of Honduras and Mexico, creating precious memories with her husband, children, and grandchildren. Kathy loved watching Dallas Cowboys football games and looked forward to rubbing it in when her team won and other family members teams lost. 

 Known for her warm heart, Kathy always prioritized the needs of others, often placing them before her own. Her family fondly remembers her candid advice and her ability to say, "I told you so," with a loving smile when her wisdom went unheeded.

 Kathy is predeceased by her parents, her son Phillip Lucas, her granddaughter Tessa Taylor, and her mother-in-law Velma Ruth Vela. She leaves behind her devoted husband, Richard Vela, her beloved children and grandchildren, and a legacy of love and kindness.

 The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the nurses, respiratory therapists, nurse practitioners, and doctors at Longview Regional Medical Center for the exceptional care they provided during Kathy's time in the ICU.

 Kathy's life was a beautiful story of love, sacrifice, and devotion. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her, and she will forever remain in our hearts.
