Mattie Ruth Guthrie

April 30, 1935 - May 3, 2026

Mattie Guthrie, a true free spirit and eternal explorer, took off on her final, grandest adventure on May 3, 2026 at the age of 91.

Mattie didn't just inhabit the world; she truly experienced it. Driven by an insatiable curiosity, she lived to learn, explore, and see what was around the next bend. She was happiest on a road trip with a classic paper map folded on the passenger seat. She didn't need a GPS to tell her where to go; she preferred the thrill of navigating the old-fashioned way, tracing the highways and backroads to see where they might lead. To Mattie, the journey was always the destination.

She had a deep, joyful love for the bizarre, the unusual, and the beautifully strange. If a town had an eclectic oddities shop, a hidden hole-in-the-wall diner with the best food you've never heard of, a quirky roadside attraction, or a museum for just about anything, Mattie was bound to find it. She collected stories, laughter, and memories instead of possessions, and she was always eager to share her latest discovery with anyone who would listen. She understood that the best things in life aren't things at all.

Yet, for all her love of wandering the globe and seeking out new places, her favorite anchor was always her family. She was fiercely devoted to the people she loved, and she cherished every moment spent in their company. Her family was her ultimate home base, and she brought that same sense of wonder, warmth, and acceptance to them every single day.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Kay (Jason) Brennan, daughter in law, Laura Guthrie; her cherished grandchildren, Liz (George) Branning, Sara (Carman) Cunningham, Rufe (Kelsey) Bynum, and Tyler Guthrie; and those she lovingly referred to as her "Greats" Katie, CJ, Colton, Ross and Maggie. She also leaves behind a wonderful circle of extended family members and deeply treasured friends who became family along the road.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Russell Guthrie; her son, James Guthrie; her parents, Mae and Homer Willett, and her three sisters, Edna, Ann, and Rose.

Gathering for One Last Adventure:

In honor of Mattie's 's colorful spirit, a celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, and in the true spirit of Mattie, the family asks that you skip the traditional arrangements. Instead, go out and support a local, eclectic business, try a bizarre new food, or take a road trip to somewhere you've never been.
