Norma Lou Durham

Norma Lou Durham, born Norma Lou Burgess on April 25, 1943, in Denver City, Texas, to Norman and Reba Burgess. Norma passed away peacefully at her home on April 21, 2026.

The family extends heart felt gratitude to those who lovingly cared for her at home, including her son Shane and his wife Tracy, who lived with her, as well as her devoted sitter Sherry Forrester and Lauren, Amanda, Shirley and Sierra with Heart to Heart Hospice in Tyler, Texas.

Norma was deeply loved by her husband of 63 years, Don Durham. Together, they built a life centered on faith, always putting God first and raising their children in a Christian home. They affectionately referred to one another as “sweetheart” and “best friend,” a reflection of their enduring love and partnership.

She is survived by her husband Don Durham, brother, David Burgess; her children, Tammy Durham Hughes (John) and Michael Shane Durham (Tracy); and her cherished grandchildren: Chad Hughes (Lindsey), Michelle Hughes, Wyatt Durham (Hailey), T.J. Hughes (Katherine), Andy Durham (Caroline), Lauren Hughes Fotheringham (Michael), and Hallie Parrish.

Norma was also blessed with 15 great-grandchildren: Makenzie Newell, Mason Hughes, Jackson Ikey, Lincoln Fotheringham, Grayson Hughes, Carson Hughes, Beckham Fotheringham, Logan Hughes, Luna Durham, Nova Durham, Kaden Hughes, Kya Durham, Kohen Wolaver, Presley Hughes, Penelope Durham and one great-granddaughter on the way.

Norma dedicated many years of her life to education, teaching in Mesquite ISD and Tyler ISD, where she made a lasting impact on countless students. She and Don retired in their early 50s and spent their years enjoying life together, especially traveling on cruises and spending each November in their favorite condo in Destin, Florida.

They were active members of West Erwin Church of Christ and Shiloh Road Church of Christ in Tyler, where their faith and fellowship were central to their lives.

Norma will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Mom, we will see you again on that glorious day when we are called home.
